SUMMARY:The War Shirt
DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Luke Theatre is proud to launch the ninth event in its Virtual Series – the original\, autobiographical play “The War Shirt” written and performed by Santa Barbaran Michael Downey. This powerful play\, recorded live onstage at The Luke will begin streaming for free\, along with the other eight Series events\, on March 31st\, 2022\, and available 24/7 at www.luketheatre.org. \nMichael Downey is a gay\, African American man\, and his play revolves around his life-long journey with his father\, Bill Downey. While “The War Shirt” centers around Michael’s evolving relationship with his father\, it also traces the unfolding and maturation of his identity as a gay man. The work also embraces the influence of African American ancestors and past events on Downey’s present life and includes a Native American perspective that influenced his father’s course of action\, particularly in his later life. \nDowney added\, “This play is a response to a long process that began with my grandmother filling my head with stories as a child. My gay sensibility also began as a child and I did not conform to my Dad’s expectations of how a “proper” boy should behave. However\, at the end of his life\, he fully embraced me with absolute love and respect. Of all my creative work in theatre and dance in Santa Barbara over the last 40 years\, this play is my boldest creative statement to date.” \nNOTE: March 3rd & 4th live shows are a private event. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Matilda!
DESCRIPTION:Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. The daughter of abusive parents\, Matilda finds refuge in library books\, which she reads quickly and in creating her own stories. Things are no better at school\, where Matilda also must face a tyrannical and cruel headmistress\, Miss Trunchbull\, who believes in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum est Magitum\,” or “Children are Maggots.” She finds companionship in her teacher\, Miss Honey\, though well-intentioned\, is shy and fragile. Brave little Matilda knows she has to stand up against the adults in her world\, and in doing so\, discovers her own remarkable powers. Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates an important lesson — that even though life can be hard\, “nobody but me is gonna change my story” so “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.”

SUMMARY:Folk Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser\, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador\, and the sizzlingly-talented Californian cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one\, but the duo’s dazzling teamwork\, driving rhythms\, and their shared passion for improvising on the melody and the groove of Scottish tunes has helped reconstruct and revive the Scottish tradition of playing dance music on violin and cello. They have toured internationally for over twenty years\, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound\, and have released six critically acclaimed award-winning albums along the way. \nDon’t miss this very special collaboration with two superstars of the Folk World! A program of Celtic music just in time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with brand new orchestrations by Adam Phillips of some of Alasdair and Natalie’s most loved pieces! March 12th has already sold out!

SUMMARY:Looking for Elvis
DESCRIPTION:LOOKING FOR ELVIS is an InterAct original. Imagine every sci-fi movie since the 1970s\, mix them together\, add 80 young performers\, the phenomenal Elvis\, a liberal sprinkling of comedy and you have ‘Looking For Elvis’. You will find echoes of E.T.\, Starman\, Star Trek and is any show complete without a dash of Star Wars?\n\nInterAct is a theatre school for kids ages 4 to 16\, based here in Santa Barbara. Each academic year\, we offer three ten-week terms with classes in singing\, dance\, and acting\, as well as summer camps. All of them are inspiring and fun. As a theatre school we like to offer a full range of classes\, theater skills\, and performance opportunities.  This is our first large theater ‘event’. Even our youngest students join in. For us\, it’s an exercise in teamwork\, which is what theatre is all about.
