SUMMARY:Doctrine of Recovery - Green Film Series
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 20th year anniversary celebration\, The Marjorie Luke Theatre has created a Green Film Series. Throughout 2024 we will be offering films\, panel discussions\, speakers and art-exhibits with environmental themes. We will be focusing on environmental issues facing California\, and primarily the Central Coast. \nPlease join us at the Marjorie Luke Theatre for our second film in our Green Series. The Santa Barbara premiere of The Doctrine of Recovery traces the roots of the colonial conquest of North America to the so-called “Doctrine of Discovery\,” which was issued by the Pope in 1493 and which justified the dispossession of Native populations from the lands of North America. Through the voices of four Indigenous women\, the film uncovers this little-known history and advocates for a “Doctrine of Recovery” to restore social and environmental justice\, reestablish harmony with the Earth\, revive the sacred feminine\, and ensure the survival of our species. Directed by Indigenous filmmaker Brisind (Somebody’s Daughter) and produced by former Santa Barbaran Leslee Goodman\, along with Georgina Lightning of Tribal Alliance Productions\, the film features an all-female cast and celebrates sacred feminism. \nThree generations of Tribal women—Casey Camp-Horinek (Reservation Dogs\, Avatar: The Last Airbender)\, Crystle Lightning (Trickster\, Yellowstone)\, Juliet Langley Hayes (Say Her Name)\, and Belinda Bull Shoe—unapologetically expose the influence of founding patriarchs and white supremacy in places most never thought to look\, and in doing so demonstrate the ongoing and devastating formula patterned by the Doctrine of Discovery. The film won the Indigenous Futures Award from the 2023 Social Justice Film Festival; the Feature Documentary Award from the 2023 Dreamspeakers’ International Film Festival; and has received Official Selection Laurels from Red Nation International Film Festival\, Imaginative Film Festival\, Docs Without Borders\, and others. \nThe event will open with a Native American prayer\, followed by the 75-minute screening of the film “Doctrine of Recovery” and a panel discussion with producer Leslee Goodman and special guest film actor and Ponca elder Casey Camp-Horinek. \n \nCasey Camp-Horinek is known for Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)\, Reservation Dogs (2021-2023)\, Behind the Door of a Secret Girl (2014)\, Barking Water (2009)\, and DreamKeeper (2003).

It’s an epic tale that immerses us in the wonders and majesty of these trees\, while exploring our ever-evolving relationship with them. Living links to the past\, redwoods hold powers that may play a role in our future\, including their ability to withstand fire and capture carbon\, to offer clues about longevity\, and even to enhance our own well-being. Through the voices of scientists\, artists\, Native communities and others\, we discover the many connections that sustain these forests —and the promise of solutions that will help us ALL rise up to face the challenges that lay ahead.

DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Luke Theatre invites you to an outstanding benefit concert featuring local music with the Doublewide Kings and Friends celebrating the music of Neil Young on Saturday\, January 25\, at 7:30 P.M. \nOn the heels of their recently sold out ‘Next Waltz’ show with the Santa Barbara Symphony at the Granada Theatre\, the Doublewide Kings are riding high. Known for their unique take on some of the biggest names in classic rock\, the Kings have played five sold-out tribute shows at the Lobero and Granada Theaters. It all started with their Neil Young show in 2018\, followed by Crosby\, Stills & Nash in 2019\, The Allman Brothers in 2021\, Van Morrison (with the Santa Barbara Symphony) in 2023 and\, finally\, The Band (also with the Santa Barbara Symphony) in 2024. \nThe Kings are returning to their roots by celebrating the music of Neil Young again in 2025 – but this time with the help of some very special guests. Playing with the Kings will be Santa Barbara favorite Johnny Irion! The Kings shared the stage with Johnny at Elings Park this fall and had a strong connection after playing several Neil Young songs together. Also sitting in with the Kings will be local guitar phenom Jackson Gillies\, Phil Salazar on fiddle and Marc McKennon on Dobro. \nIf you’re wondering how the Kings sound playing Neil Young’s music\, you can find their live recording from the 2018 Lobero show on Spotify under the title ‘Sleep Never Rusts\,’ or you can see the show videos here on  YouTube. \n

DESCRIPTION:The all-female sextet Las Guaracheras was born in 2017 in the city of Cali\, Colombia. Laura Linares and Mónica Castro\, who as lovers of the son (“sound” in Spanish) and guaracha genres\, decided to form an instrumental group in which they could express all their intense musical feelings while\, at the same time\, preserving the essence of guaracha.
