SUMMARY:¡Viva el Arte!: QUITAPENAS
DESCRIPTION:The ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! season continues with QUITAPENAS! The band was formed around their shared love of dance rhythms from the Tropical Afro Latin diaspora. Quitapenas means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena\,” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you without a worry. The group is made up of first generation sons of immigrant parents from Guatemala and Mexico. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s\, 70s\, and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola\, Peru\, Colombia\, Brazil\, and beyond. \n

SUMMARY:Greetings From Summerland
DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Luke Theatre is proud to announce a special screening event to kick off our 2024 Green Series and commemorate Earth Day. Join us for a screening of the film Greetings from Summerland: Birthplace of Offshore Drilling\, a thought-provoking documentary that sheds light on the environmental challenges facing Summerland and its leaking oil wellheads. If you reside in Santa Barbara County\, this is a must see film! \nDirected and produced by Harry Rabin and Joey Szalkiewicz of On the Wave Productions. Rabin\, who is also the Program Director at Heal the Ocean (HTO) has first handedly seen the urgent environmental issues facing Summerland\, CA. In 2017\, HTO tackled the daunting task of capping the leaking oil wellhead\, Becker. It is only one of over 200 offshore wellheads\, many of which have been leaking since 1896. \nWe are thrilled to work with local filmmakers to bring you Greetings From Summerland followed by a panel including the local filmmaker & politicians. The film reviews the history of the Summerland wells and looks at ongoing impacts through the eyes of those closest to the wells\, including Summerland artist Kerri Hedden and scientist and researcher Dr. Ira Leifer\, who was a project leader with the Summerland Oil Mitigation Study. Greetings From Summerland will take you back in time\, over 120 years\, to present day and how this seemingly endless local issue reveals a global Methane issue fueling climate change and the message that all need to be remediated now. \nA town hall discussion will follow immediately after the film with Filmmaker\, and Heal the Ocean representative Harry Rabin\, a panel of researchers\, State Lands representative\, Assemblyman Gregg Hart and representatives from both the offices of Salud Carbajal and Monique Limon. We will discuss what solutions both legislative and the field work and future plans are in the works for attacking the problem of leaking wellheads and the issues surrounding them. \nThis show will have a Sunkissed Pantry in the lobby\, before and after the event\, 3:30pm – 6:00pm. Additionally enjoy a Makers Mart with local environmentally friendly businesses showcasing their products! Film is 21 min. Panel estimated 1hr. Q&A for 20. \nTicket Sales link below!

SUMMARY:¡Viva el Arte!: Jarabe Mexicano
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Jarabe Mexicano in the final concert of this ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! season! Jarabe Mexicano captures the nostalgic spirit of their border roots with their charismatic brand of “Bordeño-Soul\,” which honors the musical tastes and cultural influences of its members. Jarabe\, which translates to “concoction\,” highlights the eclectic mix of genres they perform ranging from Mexican Folk\, Rock & Roll\, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock\, Trío Romántico\, and popular Cumbia. \nAs educators\, cultural ambassadors and advocates for the arts\, Jarabe Mexicano is “thought-provoking\, heartfelt\, and engaging\,” the Vilar Performing Arts Center raves. Both their concerts\, entitled “Fiesta En Familia\,” and their educational outreach program “Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life” aim to create a deeper and more inclusive sense of family and community\, with a special commitment to underserved groups. \n*Please note\, this event begins at 6pm*

SUMMARY:Doctrine of Recovery - Green Film Series
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 20th year anniversary celebration\, The Marjorie Luke Theatre has created a Green Film Series. Throughout 2024 we will be offering films\, panel discussions\, speakers and art-exhibits with environmental themes. We will be focusing on environmental issues facing California\, and primarily the Central Coast. \nPlease join us at the Marjorie Luke Theatre for our second film in our Green Series. The Santa Barbara premiere of The Doctrine of Recovery traces the roots of the colonial conquest of North America to the so-called “Doctrine of Discovery\,” which was issued by the Pope in 1493 and which justified the dispossession of Native populations from the lands of North America. Through the voices of four Indigenous women\, the film uncovers this little-known history and advocates for a “Doctrine of Recovery” to restore social and environmental justice\, reestablish harmony with the Earth\, revive the sacred feminine\, and ensure the survival of our species. Directed by Indigenous filmmaker Brisind (Somebody’s Daughter) and produced by former Santa Barbaran Leslee Goodman\, along with Georgina Lightning of Tribal Alliance Productions\, the film features an all-female cast and celebrates sacred feminism. \nThree generations of Tribal women—Casey Camp-Horinek (Reservation Dogs\, Avatar: The Last Airbender)\, Crystle Lightning (Trickster\, Yellowstone)\, Juliet Langley Hayes (Say Her Name)\, and Belinda Bull Shoe—unapologetically expose the influence of founding patriarchs and white supremacy in places most never thought to look\, and in doing so demonstrate the ongoing and devastating formula patterned by the Doctrine of Discovery. The film won the Indigenous Futures Award from the 2023 Social Justice Film Festival; the Feature Documentary Award from the 2023 Dreamspeakers’ International Film Festival; and has received Official Selection Laurels from Red Nation International Film Festival\, Imaginative Film Festival\, Docs Without Borders\, and others. \nThe event will open with a Native American prayer\, followed by the 75-minute screening of the film “Doctrine of Recovery” and a panel discussion with producer Leslee Goodman and special guest film actor and Ponca elder Casey Camp-Horinek. \n \nCasey Camp-Horinek is known for Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)\, Reservation Dogs (2021-2023)\, Behind the Door of a Secret Girl (2014)\, Barking Water (2009)\, and DreamKeeper (2003).

SUMMARY:Giants Rising - Green Film Series
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 20th year anniversary celebration\, The Marjorie Luke Theatre has created a Green Film Series. Throughout 2024 we will be offering films\, panel discussions\, speakers and art-exhibits with environmental themes. We will be focusing on environmental issues facing California\, and primarily the Central Coast. \nThe third film of The Marjorie Luke Theatre’s Green Film Series\, Giants Rising. The film reveals the secrets and the saga of the coastal redwoods—the tallest and among the oldest living beings on Earth. It’s an epic tale that immerses us in the wonders and majesty of these trees\, while exploring our ever-evolving relationship with them. Living links to the past\, redwoods hold powers that may play a role in our future\, including their ability to withstand fire and capture carbon\, to offer clues about longevity\, and even to enhance our own well-being. Through the voices of scientists\, artists\, Native communities and others\, we discover the many connections that sustain these forests —and the promise of solutions that will help us ALL rise up to face the challenges that lay ahead.
