SUMMARY:The War Shirt: A Dialogue with the Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Michael Downey\, a participant in PPF’s Lavender Elders group\, collaborated with filmmaker Rod Lathim to produce a film that explores the backstory of creating the play The War Shirt. The new documentary The War Shirt: A Dialogue With the Ancestors screens at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, September 19th at The Marjorie Luke Theatre. It explores the guidance of ancestral messages from African and Native American cultures in the creation of the play and this film. A panel discussion follows. Admission is free but reservations are required! To reserve your ticket\, visit www.LukeTheatre.org/Ticket-Reservation. The Film is Open Captioned and discussion interpreted in Sign Language.  \nThe seed for the creation of this 45-minute documentary was planted in 2022\, when Santa Barbara based actor-dancer Michael Downey wrote and performed a one-person play titled The War Shirt. His story explored his circumstances as a gay man\, his relationship with a disapproving father\, and the reconciliation that occurred hours before his father’s passing. Downey sensed that something larger had been set in motion that needed to continue beyond the play to fulfill itself. The War Shirt: A Dialogue With the Ancestors is the result. It is a documentary that brings new light to various historical and cultural events that were suggested but not explored in his original script. \nVarious Downey ancestors were born into slavery\, and the documentary examines the horrors of the Middle Passage—that trans-Atlantic voyage that carried millions of captives from West Africa to the North American continent. The film is particularly focused on the continuing influence of those African ancestors and the significance of honoring them. \nDirector/Producer Rod Lathim views both the play The War Shirt and this documentary as a direct results of intangible influences that he feels are guiding and impacting events in our physical world. Lathim asserts that these influences enhanced his intuitive sense as a director and illuminated the development of the play script and subsequent documentary. Both Downey and Lathim acknowledge a guiding presence of African and Native American Ancestors and felt strongly that this film needed to be made to celebrate and honor them. \nThe film includes perspectives that draw from American Indian belief systems and South African Zulu healing practices. Featured personalities include Dr. Jeanne Eder\, a Dakota Sioux and adopted member of the Crow tribe\, Dr. David Cumes\, a South African surgeon and Sangoma practitioner\, Davies King\, UCSB Distinguished Professor of Theater/Dance\, and Aaron Jones\, Director of UCSB’s Educational Opportunity Program and a former participant in an interfaith pilgrimage that traced the trans-Atlantic transport of West African captives to the Western Hemisphere. These various cultural points of view speak to Downey’s continuing journey into self-discovery and suggest a doorway of possibility that is open to the rest of us as well whenever we choose to embrace our own histories and inevitably uncover the timeless bonds that connect our lives to others. \nThe film is generously sponsored by the SBCC Foundation\, Michael Downey\, Claude Raffin\, Marjorie Luke Theatre\, and Pacific Pride Foundation.

SUMMARY:Citizen McCaw
DESCRIPTION:Citizen McCaw\, the prescient and acclaimed 2008 documentary that chronicles the heartbreaking and heedless destruction of Santa Barbara’s historic daily newspaper\, will return for a free\, one-time public screening at The Marjorie Luke Theatre\, Wednesday\, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. \nThe film focuses on the dramatic events of 2006-07 that stunned the community and set in motion the slow decline and inexorable death of the once-vibrant Santa Barbara News-Press\, now in bankruptcy proceedings. While presaging an era of vast economic disruption for the newspaper industry\, the documentary most importantly tells the sad\, shameful and uniquely local story of how an enterprise was destroyed\, after serving Santa Barbara\, for a century-and-a-half\, as a town square of shared and trusted public interest news and information. \nThis free showing is underwritten by Newsmakers\, with support and permission from the film’s co-producers\, Rod Lathim\, Charles Minsky\, Peter Seaman\, Brent Sumner\, and Sam Tyler. It will be followed by a panel discussion about the future of local news. \nThe panelists include:\nJennifer Holt\, UCSB Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies and an expert on the changing media landscape\nSarah Sinclair\, Advertising Director of the Santa Barbara Independent\nGwyn Lurie\, Publisher of the Montecito Journal\nRyan P. Cruz\, journalist at the Santa Barbara Independent\nLily Dallow\, Digital Content Director of KEYT

DESCRIPTION:Music by: DJ Reeact \nPanelists\nVivian Storm\nJordan Killebrew\nMore TBD \nAll ages welcome\nDress up\, down\, or comfortable; come as you are! Venue lobby and theater are accessible and indoors \nWhat if we treated mental health\, rest\, and joy like they were more than individual responsibilities? What if we considered joy to be a community responsibility? This is the center of our panel discussion on community care\, featuring Vivian Storm\, Jordan Killebrew\, and more. \nWe are kicking off Pride & Joy weekend with a community conversation at the beautiful Marjorie Luke Theatre\, a short ride from State Street and in the heart of one of Santa Barbara’s Latine/x/o/a neighborhoods.  The panel of queer Black community leaders and experts in their fields will be sharing stories\, adding to our toolkits\, and helping us learn the power of every-day practices that make mental health & wellbeing central to how we build and nurture community. SUMMARY:Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:Big Picture Ranch and Area 23a present the Santa Barbara premiere screening of the film Common Ground\, a hopeful and uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement\,” who produce tremendous quantities of nutritionally dense food and are working to balance the climate – all while bringing our entire ecosystem back to life. The film explores how Americans from different walks of life\, different political backgrounds\, and different parts of the country share one thing in common –the very soil beneath their feet. The film investigates the power of “regenerative” farming systems – from large to small scale farmers who are the champions of soil health as the key to unlocking more (and healthier) food to feed America and the world. Cast includes: Laura Dern\, Rosario Dawson\, Jason Mamoa\, Woody Harrelson\, Ian Somerhalder\, and Donald Glover. \nAfter the film\, join award-winning filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell\, and to learn more about the film and the incredible regenerative agriculture movement planting nationwide. \n

SUMMARY:Dar Williams With Amy Ray Band
DESCRIPTION:PCINW Concerts Presents Dar Williams and Amy Ray Band! \nDar Williams lives at the intersection of pop and folk. She fuses many genres (blues\, rock\, jazz)\, resulting in a rather organic sound. She has been making music for over a decade. Williams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. \nPulling from every direction — Patty Griffin to Patti Smith\, Big Star to Bon Iver — Amy Ray’s music might best be described as folk-rock\, though even that would be a tough sell\, depending on the song. Ray’s musical beginnings trace back to her high school days in Atlanta\, Georgia\, when she and Emily Saliers formed the duo that would become the Indigo Girls. Rooted in shared passions for harmony and justice\, the Indigo Girls have forged a career that combines artistry and activism to push against every boundary and box anyone tries to put them in. As activists\, they have supported as many great causes as they can\, from LGBTQ+ rights to voter registration\, going so far as to co-found a Native environmental justice organization\, Honor the Earth\, with Winona LaDuke in 1993. As artists\, they have dipped their toes into a similar multitude of waters — folk\, rock\, country\, pop\, and more — but the resulting releases are always pure Indigo.
