SUMMARY:Storm Reading
DESCRIPTION:On March 19\, 2021\, The Marjorie Luke Theatre Virtual Concert Series will proudly begin streaming Access Theatre’s critically acclaimed stage production Storm Reading\, with the support of Series Sponsors and Event Sponsorship by The Independent Living Resource Center celebrating its 45th anniversary.  \nThis vintage\, ground-breaking play was developed in Santa Barbara and first premiered in 1988. The play was enthusiastically embraced by audiences and launched a six-year tour across the USA\, to Canada and England\, before being filmed for television in 1996. In a Variety review\, Storm Reading was described as\, “Pure theatrical magic…breath-taking. Likely to leave viewers irrevocably changed.” \nStorm Reading is based on the life experiences of Neil Marcus – a poet\, humorist\, philosopher and\, since the international tour of the play\, a disability culture icon. Marcus lives with a neurological disorder called Dystonia\, which impacts his ability to speak and control movement. His approach to life and disability is uniquely refreshing and progressive\, and Storm Reading introduces audiences to his perspective on living one’s life as a truly bold and authentic journey. “Disability is an art\,” stated Marcus. Marcus’ voice continues to resonate with people\, especially in a time when being ‘different’ in any way continues to be challenging in our society. He is joined onstage by Matthew Ingersoll\, who often voices for Neil and portrays a myriad of characters\, and American Sign Language interpreter Kathryn Voice.

SUMMARY:The War Shirt
DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Luke Theatre is proud to launch the ninth event in its Virtual Series – the original\, autobiographical play “The War Shirt” written and performed by Santa Barbaran Michael Downey. This powerful play\, recorded live onstage at The Luke will begin streaming for free\, along with the other eight Series events\, on March 31st\, 2022\, and available 24/7 at www.luketheatre.org. \nMichael Downey is a gay\, African American man\, and his play revolves around his life-long journey with his father\, Bill Downey. While “The War Shirt” centers around Michael’s evolving relationship with his father\, it also traces the unfolding and maturation of his identity as a gay man. The work also embraces the influence of African American ancestors and past events on Downey’s present life and includes a Native American perspective that influenced his father’s course of action\, particularly in his later life. \nDowney added\, “This play is a response to a long process that began with my grandmother filling my head with stories as a child. My gay sensibility also began as a child and I did not conform to my Dad’s expectations of how a “proper” boy should behave. However\, at the end of his life\, he fully embraced me with absolute love and respect. Of all my creative work in theatre and dance in Santa Barbara over the last 40 years\, this play is my boldest creative statement to date.” \nNOTE: March 3rd & 4th live shows are a private event. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Matilda!
DESCRIPTION:Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. The daughter of abusive parents\, Matilda finds refuge in library books\, which she reads quickly and in creating her own stories. Things are no better at school\, where Matilda also must face a tyrannical and cruel headmistress\, Miss Trunchbull\, who believes in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum est Magitum\,” or “Children are Maggots.” She finds companionship in her teacher\, Miss Honey\, though well-intentioned\, is shy and fragile. Brave little Matilda knows she has to stand up against the adults in her world\, and in doing so\, discovers her own remarkable powers. Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates an important lesson — that even though life can be hard\, “nobody but me is gonna change my story” so “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.”
